Gujarat Diary

Hi Meera Enjoyed your article, particularly the reference to the ennui. It appears to be a "rightist" period of history right now, with attitudes hardening all over the world, doesn't it? George W. is leading the world on that, and everyone seems happy to follow. Tolerance and appreciation of diversity don't seem be in fashion right now. Oh well. These things come, and then they go. Humankind doesn't learn from history, only from personal experience it seems. Very well written. A complete departure from your other articles, which I also enjoyed.

Penis Envy

Obviously you haven't lived yet. Add finely chopped onions to the moong dal and ketchup. Garnish with dhaniya. Remember, it took a man with the regulation appendage to figure that out!

Brand Name Mania

Hi - I enjoyed your article. There aren't any easy answers, of course, and you seem to have found a good balance somewhere. I'm a dad who encountered the same issues here in Ahmedabad. I chose to live in Ahmedabad because it was a place where good taste mattered and money was never flaunted. When she was 9, my daughter ticked me off for picking her up from school in my big car (I had a Standard 2000) and insisted I come only in the Maruti 800 (What will my friends think! That I have a show-off for a father!!!). When she was 16 she almost wrote me off as a father because I wouldn't buy a Laser Disc player. Then when she was 19 she herself nixed many expensive purchases (Not worth it, Dad!)... but she will not wear the lower priced jeans that I do. She only wears Levis. I'm sure you'll encounter these twists and turns and develop an appreciation of the fact that there's another person there, with a slightly different perspective on life and products and brands... I imagine the peer pressure on her is phenomenal and she probably resents having to give in to it, but will not admit that to you, of course! All the best to you and your daughter. Thank you for sharing this with us. Rajiv

Juvenile Delinquency and Me!

Never mind being called preachy. You've understood stuff many "grown-ups" never figure out. Your maturity will give you an advantage in life if you don't start taking yourself too seriously. I liked your article.

Phantom Menace or Racist Trash?

I haven't seen the movie but have seen enough stereotypes to know what you mean.

We do it too, though. And we also use slant eyed characters and "gora" characters with names like Robert.

Isn't it comforting to know that we are every bit as narrow minded as the Americans? Something to do with the insecure human condition, maybe?
